The 'Celtic Weave' concert developed by the New Ross and
District Pipe Band has played to packed audiences in many parts of the
World including USA , France, Spain, Lithuania, England, and
Wales. It
integrates the stirring sound of bagpipes and percussion with other
traditional instruments (fiddle, accordion, bodhran,tin
whistle, flute, etc.) with vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar,
bass guitar, keyboards, and kit drums. Into this mix , the band also
introduces Irish dancing and the odd touch of poetry.
One of the band's pipers, Des O'Callaghan features on acoustic
and electric guitar while piper /drummer Theresa Shalloe is a
very fine tin whistle, accordion, keyboard and concertina player. Guest
musicians include Darran Byrne (guitar, vocals, bodhran) , Mark
Comerford (guitar, vocals,) John Aspel (of 'Emeralds' fame on vocals) ,
Seamus Power (vocals,keyboard) , Keith O'Neill (bass guitar,vocals) ,
In the last concert on 14th. November 2009, the band was joined by
Alain Finot from Brittany ,France (keyboards, bagpipes), Jean Louis
Caoudal from Lorient ,France (percussion) , Linda Grace (vocals), World Champion drummer Stephen
Creighton, drummers from the St. laurence O'Toole Pipe BAnd, pipers (and singers) from the New Ross FCA pipe band.
The repertoire covered Irish , Scottish, Breton and modern music.-
songs, airs, jigs, reels, hornpipes, virtuoso drumming, film themes.
The concert was a tribute concert to Frank Saunders of Donnybrook in
Dublin who died last year. Frank was one of the top drummers ever to
have lived in Ireland and was renowned in the 1950's and 1960's as the
percussion leader of the famous Fintan Lalor Pipe Band. Frank was well
known and respected in Ireland and Scotland and is credited with
bringing pipe band drumming in Ireland to a new level of perfection and
excellence. When the New Ross band was formed in 1974 , the band was
extremely fortunate to secure the services of Frank , thus
beginning a Saunders family tradition that exists to this day. The
Saunders family are still commuting from Dublin to teach drumming in
New Ross and to play with the New Ross band. Frank Saunders
junior produced one of Ireland's top drumming corps in New Ross. Frank
Senior's last competitive outing was with his son Frank junior as lead
drummer in the New Ross and District Pipe Band playing in the
World Pipe Band Championships in 1996 when the band won 6th. prize and
the prize for the best Bass and Tenor section in the World!
Our guest of honour on the night was Frank's widow and long time partner in pipe bands , Betty. Betty was a
piper with the City of Dublin Girl's Pipe Band and the Saunders name is
nowadays synonymous with pipe bands in Ireland.
Many of our young members are also members of the Irish National Youth Pipe Band
which is directed by band member Brian MacMahon. The next concert for
the NYPB takes place in Letterkenny on Saturday 20th. February 2010.
